Faulkner on the Balcony
September 05, 2018
So, I have a confession—come in close: All my stories are love stories. About love and being alone. Searching for who knows what in places I both know and don’t. A journey into the heart, which is embarrassing to say. So let’s say into a ventricle, up an artery, down a capillary. Something has a hold of me and I don’t know what. I don’t know. I measure it in units I don’t know: in quarts, ounces, pints, gallons, drams. A drop, a pinch, a cord, a cup, a hekat...

Impossible Friends
April 26, 2018
Tristan writes about his buddies for Meanjin... "...I have a few stories to tell. These stories are about some writer friends—ones who are writers but are, at least in my mind, more than that. And I want to tell these stories because I wouldn’t be friends with them if we hadn’t met through writing and I think that’s important." [read more...]
The Book About the Dead Man / Conversation

Tristan Foster was recently interviewed for RIC Journal about his forthcoming book, Letter to the Author of the Letter to the Father. Said Foster: "Firstly, I want to say I’m glad we’re talking about lines and not narratives or pages or even paragraphs. I think lines are the best I’ve got at the moment—certainly in this book. I think in any creative act it’s crucial to have one eye on what is next—what comes after this. Transmission Press and I have worked long and hard on getting this right, but on the level of the sentence. The whole time I’ve been putting this book together, I’ve also been thinking about what I want to do next. I think this is a critical mode of being for the artist." [read more...]
Transmission Press to publish debut short fiction collection from Tristan Foster
November 29, 2017
We are delighted to announce the forthcoming publication of Letter to the Author of the Letter to the Father, the debut collection of short fiction from Tristan Foster.
Tristan Foster is writer and critic from Sydney known to readers in Australia and internationally as the co-editor-in-chief of 3:AM Magazine, a highly-esteemed site for experimental fiction and literary and cultural criticism. Over recent years, Foster has established a considerable reputation, contributing fiction and criticism to literary magazines and websites including Asymptote, gorse, Overland, Verity La, Tincture, Seizure and The Lifted Brow. He is also a particularly perceptive interviewer, working with authors from around the globe who explore the edges of conventional literary practice.
‘The texts in this collection attempt to hunt down the lost or the dead and trace their paths, from small apartments in the suburbs of Sydney to Malpensa Airport in Milan, in the hope of witnessing what they get up to when our backs are turned,’ said Foster. ‘It’s a thrill to be working with Transmission Press, a young and exciting publishing house with an appetite for the unorthodox.’
In the preparation of Letter to the Author of the Letter to the Father, to be published in the first half of 2018, Foster has worked closely with editor Luke Stegemann, whose 2017 book The Beautiful Obscure was the first title published by Transmission Press.
‘It has been especially rewarding to watch such a distinct voice emerge and display its range over a full collection,’ Stegemann commented. ‘These are fruitful years for adventurous work in Australian writing. Smaller publishers are leading the way, increasingly bold in what they can and will offer, and readers are responding. Foster’s unconventional work contains elements of remarkable originality and beauty, and his presence via this collection will add a significant voice to the world of independent Australian letters.’
